The Samba Team is proud to announce the release of Samba 3.6, a new version of the award-winning software for free, print and authentication server suite for Microsoft Windows (R) customers.

The first free software SMB2 server

Samba 3.6 includes the first implementation of Free Software in new Microsoft SMB2 protocol used. SMB2 Samba runs with a new asynchronous server architecture, allowing Samba to show performance improvements technology brings SMB2 Microsoft Network.

New SMB2 Samba server has been tested by leading suppliers and has been able to duplicate the performance of some network applications when running in conjunction with Microsoft Windows 7 clients.

The future evolution of our server and a suite SMB2 client, combined with our growing number of SMB2 tests, continue to drive performance improvements and enhanced support for Microsoft Windows that Samba users have come to expect from our software.

Improved printing support =========================

The print subsystem Samba 3.6 has been completely rewritten to use automatically generated Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and is more compatible with the architecture of Windows SPOOLSS printing subsystem, including the export of data to the printer via registration interfaces.

Samba 3.6 is the first “cable” compatible with the version of Microsoft print subsystem SPOOLSS, and is the basis for our ongoing work to create an implementation of Microsoft Windows print are available separately Samba File Server .

Improved clustered file server support ======================================

Based on our success as the first commercial implementation of a cluster of SMB / CIFS Server, Samba 3.6 provides industry-leading scalability and performance as SMB2/SMB/CIFS clustered file server, with our “cluster TDB” (ctdb ) technology – also available as Free Software.

Written and tested to be compatible with most clustered file systems, both free and proprietary software, Samba 3.6 with ctdb solution provides a scalable clustered file server fully semantic Windows file sharing.

Samba has been sent ctdb products production file serving for many years, some of the world’s most demanding customers.

Simplified Identity Mapping ===========================

Samba 3. 6 has simplified the complex field of cartography Linux (R) and UNIX (R) the identities of users and Windows groups. Samba 3. 6 contains a new implementation of the code assignment of identity that allows the automatic assignment of Linux and UNIX identities when Windows clients connect to a Samba server, even in a clustered configuration file serving.

Increased reliability ===================

Samba 3.6 has been tested with our test suite smbtorture widely accepted, created by the Samba Samba team to test itself, and is now used by most companies writing software SMB2/SMB/CIFS files server to test their own products.

In addition, Samba is one of the eleven open source projects that the integrity of the major software vendors Coverity has been certified as “safe” and has come to Coverity “Integrity Rung 2” certification.

A modular toolkit for OEM vendor has ======================================

As Free Software, Samba 3.6 is the ideal choice for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) for use in its file, print and authentication products. That is easily integrated into a variety of different tasks, and can be customized at will by the supplier to meet your needs.

In addition, Samba 3.6 includes a modular system of “Virtual File System” (VFS) interface that marketers can use to customize quickly and efficiently Samba to seize the specific characteristics of its underlying technology without having to modify any code Central Samba. Of advanced file systems for the analysis of network traffic, Samba VFS layer allows external code that can be easily integrated with Samba. The modules are provided as source code examples for vendors to customize to your liking.
