Using Dotdeb is very simple.

1. First add these two lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

deb squeeze-php54 all
deb-src squeeze-php54 all

2. Now fetch the appropriate GnuPG key:

cat dotdeb.gpg | sudo apt-key add –

3.Install PHP 5.4:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install php5 php5-curl php5-gd php5-mysql php5-cli

You can check your php version now:

root@deb:/# php -v
