A little while ago  I ran into memory problems on an VPS.  It turned out to be due to the GD library having issues with large images.
I  discovered is that the PHP memory limit  only applies to actual PHP code and not C libraries like GD that are called from PHP.
To put a cap on the memory usage of Apache I set process limits for the main Apache process  using ulimit.

On Debian this can be done by adding this to the bottom of /etc/default/apache2:

ulimit -v 1048576

NOTE:  This is for a limit of 1GB of virtual memory.

Nmap, version 6.0 of the open source network scanner has been released. Nmap is a well-liked utility for scanning & mapping network ranges to extract knowledge about the systems attached to the network & the network’s topology. In version 6.0, the developers have added full IPv6 support while enhancing Nmap’s scripting engine, web scanning, mapping GUI & scanning performance, while also introducing a new gizmo called Nping.

Nmap has had basic IPv6 support since 2002, but with the IPv4 address exhaustion, the Nmap developers spent some months ensuring that Nmap had full IPv6 support, complete with a new IPv6 OS detection system, host discovery and raw packet port scanning.

Nmap 6.0 also includes a new command-line interface tool for network packet generation, response analysis and response time measurement called “Nping” that can generate network packets. Nping is a multipurpose tool; it can be used as a simple ping utility to detect active hosts or as a raw packet generator for network stack stress testing, ARP poisoning, Denial of Service attacks or route tracing.

All users are advised to upgrade. Detailed information about the new version, including a full list of new features and screenshots, can be found in the release notes. Further information is available in the change log and the documentation. Nmap 6.0 is available to download as source code or executable packages for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and several UNIX platforms and is licensed under a clarified GPLv2.

Perl 5.16.0 Released

Valic —  May 21, 2012 — Leave a comment

The Perl developers have announcedthat Perl 5.16.0 is now available, after twelve months of development following the release of Perl 5.14.0. The changes in Perl 5.16 are designed to improve the language without breaking any past software.

Among the features of the new release are enhancements to code features such as use, which now explicitly enables feature bundles, a more consistent eval operator, and a revamped substr function. The __SUB__ sequence now returns a reference to the current subroutine, allowing for recursive subroutines to be written more simply.

The Perl 5.16 source code is available at MetaCPAN and is being mirrored on the CPAN network. Binary packaged versions of Perl 5.16 are not currently available, but are expected in the coming days. Perl is dual licensed under the GPLv2 and its own Artistic Licence.
